John Lasseter and Walt Disney

John Lasseter

Post Digital
John Lasseter is an America animator and film director, who is the chief creative officer of pixar animation studio, Walt Disney and he is also known as the principal creative advisor for Walt Disney imagineering.  He is also known for creating the first fully computer generated animation called Toy story. In 1984 he worked on the adventures of the technique called motion blur and the personality of the animation effects.

He has won two Academy Awards Animation short film for tin toy as it was the first computer animation short to win an academy used those traditional techniques such as moving the camera the way live action film makes do.

In 1986 the graphics group of the computer Division of Lucas film was sold to Steve jobs and became pixar in 1986.

In my opinion this animation was looking realistic spacial the sound effect because it goes with the scene however the baby was looking more plastic and not quite like it sat in the ground properly. The fabrics look plastic too and but given this was one of the first attempts at this type of animation i think it is good.

Walt Disney (pre-digital)

Most people know the name of Walt Disney and they think of him when most often when talking about animation. He has had probably the biggest influence on animation and cartooning ever. He began work in the 1920s with his brother and friends producing animations for cinema advertising. But it wasn't long before his talents turned to more ambitious projects after setting up a company called Laugh-o-Grams. Some of the work included blending real characters with cartoons, something which most people seem to think as quite a more recent innovation. Working on several popular animated characters, the one that really took the imagination of the world by storm was Mickey Mouse.
Although not the first of Mickey's outings, Steamboat Willie (1928)  introduced the world of cartoons to synchronized sound. Disney was also the first to use the three-strip colour method for his animations; the first was Flowers and Trees in 1932. Then in 1937 the first full colour animated feature film was released called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Still today the Disney studios are still influential having joined with Pixar in 2006. The company won the Oscar for the short Paper Man in 2013 where traditional animation methods were combined with digital.

How Is Animation Used Across Media Sectors

Animation For Digital Media

Animation For Digital Media

The Zoetrope was invented by british mathematician william George Horner in 1833 or 1834. The Zoetrope consists of a cylinder with slits cut vertically in the sides. The cylinder is a band with a image from a set of sequenced pictures. The cylinder spins around and your looking at different types of image and that tells short story.

In our class we had Zoetrope that the tutor brought in. It consists of 9 small figures made of plastic in positions as if bouncing a ball. The ball is on card behind the figures.  if you spin round the Zoetrope (this one is made to work by battery) the pictures would pass each of the slits at speed and creating the illusion of movement.  The figures look like they are running  and bouncing the ball. Although the zoetrope works, the illusion is not brilliant because the speed is not quite fast enough. But it gives you an idea about some of the movement, especially when you remember how long ago these devices were made.

The Kinetoscope was invented by Thomas Edison in 1889 and it was developed by others between 1889 and 1892. The Kinetoscope was designed for films to be viewed by one person at the time through a peephle viewer window at the top of the device.
This work when Kinetoscope machine could be loaded with a sheet of perforated film which moved over a light and gives the impression of moving image.

The Praxinoscope was an animation device. It was invented in France in 1877 by Charles-Emile Reynaud. It used a strip of pictures placed around the inner surface of a spinning cylinder, and that tells story by looking at the pictures.

It has inner circle mirrors so when someone is looking at the mirrors it rapid succession of the image producing the illusion of motion, with a brighter and less distorted pictures than zoetrope offered.

The Phenakistoscope it was an early animation device that used the persistence of vision Principle to create an illusion of motion. It is regarded as one of the first forms of moving media entertainment that paved the way for the future motion picture and film industry.

The Zoopraxiscope is an early device for displaying motion pictures. Created by photographic Pioneer Eadweard Muybridge in 1879. The Zoopraxiscope is projected image from rotationg glass disks in rapid succession to give the impression of motion. Also the stop motion images were painted onto the glass as silhouettes.

Cinematographe. Lumiere brothers were known for creating a camera that captured moving images and projected them for people to view. The device was called the Cinematographe.
In 1895 they were responsible for the first public broadcast of a moving image production called ‘Arrival Of A Train at La Ciotat’.  Cinematographe apparatus for showing motion pictures films.

 Computer Drawing Software

I use photoshop. For examply to do my animation I used photoshop, Firstly I took a pictures put it in to the photoshop then I strat dreawing out. Then I added colours after that I i used timeline to animate. Poser Pro software allows you to make 3D animation and the characters, scenes, props, textures and lighting. Go animation is a web software sign up to their site and you have access to have thousands of characters models. Sketchbook Pro its 3D industry and its assembled a digital drawing and painted application that's essential for every form of 2D artist.

My Animation

MY ANIMATION

My animation is about media coureses at Tower Hamlets College.

MAIN CHARACTER
This character name is isaac and he study media level 3 at Tower Hamlets College. Isaac goes around the media studio and class room to show the student that media courses are available at Tower Hmalets College for anyone that is interested in media.

Feedback and review for my animation

The animation was viewed by a variety of students within the college. They were asked to score the animation on a variety of points including, style, techique, content and whether or not they thought the overall animation was fit for purpose. They were asked to use a scoring system of 0 to 10. 10 being the best.
Style should include the way the assets (drawing) were done. Technique was to include the way the animation worked (movement) and include such things as sound. The content includeded how perhaps the scenes were set. The overall purpose was to say whether or not the animation would encourage new learners to do the courses.
Above is a scan of one of the feedback sheets that other learner's gave me.
One of the entry level students scored me 8 for style, 8 for technique, 8 for content and seven for fit for purpose. Over all the total 31. I do agree with this feedback, as I didn't have enough time to make the animation perfect. However some students from entry level scored higher.
The actual animation was placed in the end of year creative art show and college so that everyone had a chance of seeing the work I had done. Lisa Coles loved the idea of having the iPads fixed to the boards so that the people could select the animations to view.
My family thought the work was excellent and were very pleased to see it.

WHAT I THINK AND MAKING IMPROVEMENTS

If my teacher ask me to do this project again I will improve my animation such as style, technique and context because style need to look good like the drawing and the animation itself.
To create the assets I took photographs and used them as reference for the drawing. This worked well as the scenes appeared as if they were in Tower Hamlets College itself and not elsewhere. I think this worked well and I was condfident with the drawing style. The technique I used made the work look quite realistic. The feedback I had was positive in this regard. Before this I used a more stylised way of drawing the characters but I was not so happy with that.
Technique any music or sound and context how my animation look and represent the story.
I will improve on those because this are the most important therefore it will be easy for the audience to understand what is going on in the animation. Also time management, start on time and finish on time or I will have timetable what I should to each day.  Although I had a timetable I did not always look at it,
Making more movement in the characters would have been good and perhaps even doing some lip movements to suggest talking. I could have used the rotoscoping technique for this, but given the time element I was not sure if I would be able to complete the work.
For the music I used some copyright free taken from Free Music Archive.

I think the style and technique was suitable for the audience and it answered the brief.
